Kristen Stewart Says She May Leave the U.S. and Base Her Career in Europe

Actress and filmmaker Kristen Stewart has revealed she’s seriously considering leaving the United States and continuing her career in Europe saying that right now she no longer feels she can work freely in the U.S. under President Donald Trump. In a recent interview with The Times of London Stewart said the current political and cultural climate — what she described as reality “breaking completely” — has made it difficult for her creatively and professionally.

Stewart, 35, pointed to challenges in the U.S. film environment as one reason she filmed her directorial debut The Chronology of Water in Latvia. She said the project would have been “impossible to do in the States,” and added that proposed tariffs on foreign films make the industry environment even more challenging.

When asked if she plans to stay in the U.S. while Trump remains president, Stewart responded “probably not” explaining that she doesn’t feel she can fully pursue her work there. She clarified that she doesn’t want to give up completely on the country but would like to make movies in Europe and then bring them back to American audiences.

Stewart’s comments place her among a number of other entertainers who have spoken openly about relocating or spending more time abroad due to political and industry pressures.
