Sarah Shahi Reveals Harrowing Childhood Experience With Her Father

Actress Sarah Shahi has made a deeply personal revelation about her childhood in her new memoir Life Is Lifey, sharing a traumatic incident involving her late father that has stayed with her for decades. In the book, the Sex/Life and Paradise star describes growing up with a father who struggled with drug addiction and was abusive toward her family.

Shahi writes that her father, who passed away in 2015, was “a drug addict” and often volatile, creating an unpredictable home environment. One summer afternoon when she was just six years old, he took her outside, held her on his hip, and pressed a gun to her head during what she calls “a bad episode.” She says she does not remember anything before that moment but vividly recalls how cold the metal felt and the heavy silence as tears ran down his face.

Although terrifying, the incident ended without injury, and Shahi reflects on it now as a defining moment in her life. She says the memory has stayed with her not because of fear but because it shaped her understanding of resilience and empathy. The experience, along with her complex relationship with her father, is one of several personal stories she shares to illustrate how she learned to navigate life’s challenges.

Shahi’s candid account highlights both the pain and the strength that came from her upbringing and provides context for how those early experiences influenced her personal growth and career.
