Hip-Hop Pioneer Michael 5000 Watts Dies At 52

Michael “5000” Watts, a legendary figure in hip-hop and founder of the influential Swishahouse record label, has died at the age of 52. The Houston native passed away on January 30, 2026, after developing a fatal heart rhythm disorder known as Torsades de Pointes, which led to sudden cardiac death while he was at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands, Texas. His family confirmed the news, saying he died surrounded by loved ones and asked for continued prayers as they navigate this difficult time.

Watts was an important architect of the Houston hip-hop scene and played a key role in bringing the city’s chopped and screwed sound to national prominence. He began his career as a mixtape DJ at just 14 years old, and in 1997 he co-founded Swishahouse, a record label that helped launch the careers of artists such as Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Chamillionaire. Through his work, he became known not just as a DJ and producer but as a mentor, cultural curator and supporter of creative ownership in music.

Friends, fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to mourn his loss and celebrate his influence on hip-hop and culture. Watts is survived by his wife, Tammy, five children and two grandchildren
