False Claim About Anne Hathaway in Epstein Files Clarified

Recent public discussion around the newly released Epstein files from the U.S. Department of Justice included a viral claim involving Hollywood actor Anne Hathaway and billionaire Bill Gates. Some social media posts suggested the actress was listed in the documents “as a highly desired guest for Bill Gates.” However, this claim is not supported by the evidence in the files.

The latest release, published on January 30, 2026, contains millions of pages of emails and other documents connected to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. These files have sparked intense scrutiny because they include mentions of many well-known figures from business, politics, and entertainment, some simply due to tangential connections.

In one email from 2014, Epstein sent a list of potential invitees for a fundraiser related to Gates to Boris Nikolić, an associate of Gates. Hathaway’s name appears in that context, but there is no indication she was personally contacted, invited, or that Gates or anyone else specifically desired her presence at the event. The appearance of her name in the email led to misinterpretation and speculation online.

Despite millions of views on social platforms promoting the false narrative, there is no credible evidence that Hathaway was considered a “highly desired guest” for Gates or that she has any meaningful connection to Epstein beyond this single mention in an email. The viral claim has been widely debunked, and the files themselves do not substantiate the sensational social media posts.

As with other high-profile figures mentioned in the documents, many references consist simply of names appearing in context rather than proof of involvement in wrongdoing or close personal relationships. The Justice Department release contains broad information about Epstein’s wide network, but the presence of a name does not imply endorsement, complicity, or personal association beyond the limited context of the records.
