Members of the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana are calling for a review of the agents’ 0.5% commission rate.

This call comes after the implementation of the revised 1% electronic transfer levy (E-Levy) took effect yesterday, January 11, 2023.

The Telcos sent messages announcing the revised rates to their subscribers.

MTN Ghana’s message to its subscribers read: “Y’ello valued customers! Please be informed that the E-Levy charge has been reduced from 1.50% to 1%, effective January 11, 2023.” The charge applies to Momo transfers above GHS 100 daily. Thank you. “Kindly visit http://www.mtn.com.gh or http://www.gra.gov.gh for more details.

During the presentation of the 2023 Budget and Economic Policy Statement, government announced a review of the 1.5 percent electronic transaction levy to 1 percent effective January 2023.

A proposal that received Parliamentary approval.

Charles Kwasi Addo, the PRO for the Mobile Money Agents Association, bemoaned the 0.5% commission rate which has been stagnant for the past 13 years.

He added that reviews concerning mobile money have been made over the years with the exception of an upward adjustment of the MoMo agents.

Charles Kwasi Addo has since called on government and the major stakeholders to ensure that the 0.5% commission rate for the MoMo agents is increased.

“The world has gone digital and the MoMo agents have played a key role in making life easier for subscribers. Ever since MoMo was introduced some 13 years ago, lots of reviews concerning mobile money have been made over the years with the exception of an upward adjustment of the commission of the MoMo agents. The commission has been pegged at 0.5 for the past 13 years,”  Charles Kwasi Addo said.
