Health Services Workers Union urge Gov’t to fast track negotiations over salaries and social security

Tension is rearing its head on the front of the Health Services Workers Union (HSWU) over low salaries affecting their social security when they retire.

The union has asked government to be swift to convene a meeting to negotiate on their conditions to improve their lot or risk disturbances in the health sector.

General secretary of Health services workers union, Franklin Owusu made the remarks while addressing members at the 13th quadrennial conference at Gomoa in the central region.

“Because we have low salaries, we also have inadequate social security, we want our members to take advantage of the social security of the union.

“To the government I have already said it, the delays in negotiating on the submitted items, we don’t want to wait until had I know happens and to the government you will what will happen if it fails to negotiate with us,”

Already other public sector institutions such as TEWU, senior staff associations at the universities have raised concerns about delay to conclude negotiations on conditions of service.

The 13th quadrennial delegates conference of the health services workers union is to solicit views of members on how to strategize in these current economic conditions.

Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress (TUC)says, it is tired with the current economic conditions and will support any agitations by the health services workers union and other unions for government to deal with the economic conditions.

Deputy General Secretary of TUC Joshua Ansah says, the current economic conditions have impacted negatively on the conditions of services of workers and government must act now.

“Comrades how can you smile when conditions are not good, ‘yabre’ we will not continue to be in this forever, we want to see a change because workers united cannot be defeated”.

He assured support for the HSWU on any agitations against government.

“The TUC fraternity we say and want to assure you that you have our support when you want to do any action, we support you to do what unions do,” Mr. Ansah stated.
