Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has declared his lifelong dream of representing England, despite having Ghanaian roots.
Born to Ghanaian parents in Stockport, Mainoo began his international career with England at the U-17 level and has progressed through the ranks.
The 19-year-old’s consistent performances for Manchester United, including scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley, earned him a spot in the England squad for the European championship in Germany.
“I’m proud of my Ghanaian heritage, but it has always been a dream to play for England. I’m happy to be here. I considered it, but I want to play for England,” Mainoo stated.

Mainoo made a substitute appearance against Serbia as England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a win.
The young player now aims for a starting role in upcoming matches against Denmark and Slovenia.
Mainoo, who made 24 appearances in the Premier League, scored three goals and one assist, said confirmation Erik ten Hag will stay on as Manchester United manager gives players “peace of mind” and is targeting more trophies under the Dutchman next season.
“He’s already got two trophies, hopefully, there are more to come,” Mainoo said. “It is nice to have that peace of mind, we know what manager we are going back to in the new season.”
“I’m so grateful to him that he put so much trust in me and believed in me to play in the team and I can’t thank him enough.”
