Simu Liu Shares Excitement Over Broadway Debut in Oh, Mary!

Simu Liu recently opened up about his long-awaited Broadway debut in the hit play Oh, Mary!, a major milestone in the 36-year-old Canadian actor’s career. Best known for starring roles in movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and popular TV shows such as Kim’s Convenience, Liu described stepping onto the Broadway stage at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City as a dream finally coming true.

In an interview with People, Liu said that Broadway had always been on his radar, and he feels extremely fortunate that the opportunity arrived at just the right moment. He explained that the question was never if he would perform on Broadway, but when. Liu called Oh, Mary! “the perfect play to make a debut” because of its originality, humour, charm and emotional range. He also shared that once he saw the production, he knew it was the right fit and immediately told his agent he wanted to be part of it.

Oh, Mary!, written by Tony Award-winning playwright Cole Escola and directed by another Tony winner, Sam Pinkleton, is a comedic and absurdist look at the life of Mary Todd Lincoln before the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. In the show, Liu portrays “Mary’s Teacher,” a multi-layered and secretive character whose complexity keeps audiences guessing. Although Liu chose not to reveal too much about the role to avoid spoilers, he hinted that there are many facets and surprising layers to the character that make it exciting to perform.

Liu’s Broadway run in Oh, Mary! began on February 3 and is scheduled to continue through April 21, 2026, giving fans plenty of time to see him shine on stage. Beyond Broadway, Liu continues to build a diverse career in film, television and now theatre as he embraces both the nerves and joy that come with live performance.
