Harry Styles Opens Up About One Direction Hiatus And Life Beyond Band
Harry Styles has spoken candidly about his experience following the indefinite hiatus of the hugely successful boy band One Direction and how stepping away from the spotlight changed his life.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times Magazine, Styles, now 32, explained that the first period after One Direction stopped working together in 2016 was emotionally intense. He said he initially felt “very alone” when performing by himself because there was no band around him to ease the pressure, and he struggled with the spotlight that came with a solo career.
Styles described how much he valued being part of a group and how moving from those shared responsibilities to standing alone on stage made him rethink how he approached his music and performances. At times, he even found it difficult to know what to do with his hands while performing alone, showing just how different it was to be a solo artist after years of performing with others.
The singer also reflected on the success of his first solo album released in 2017 and the intense expectations that came with it. While he appreciated the support from fans, he admitted he felt pressure to make his music “correct” because so many people had faith in him. This sense of responsibility shaped not just his early solo work but also how he approached life and creativity outside of One Direction.
After completing a long world tour in 2023, Styles took a substantial break from music for the first time in more than a decade. Initially unsure about taking time off, he found that this pause allowed him to reconnect with himself. Spending time in Italy, especially in Rome, gave him a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple moments of life, a pace very different from the whirlwind of touring and recording.
That extended break has influenced his upcoming album, Kiss All The Time Disco Occasionally, which is set for release on March 6 2026, and represents a new chapter in his career. By stepping back from music for a while, Styles said he gained a clearer sense of who he wanted to be both personally and artistically
