I have always played in different positions – Tariq Lamptey

Brighton & Hove Albion right-back Tariq Lamptey says he doesn’t have a problem playing in different positions, insisting he just focuses on the job he has been assigned to do.

Lamptey made 25 appearances last season, demonstrating his versatility across various roles. He played as a left-back five times, including in Brighton’s 3-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford. Additionally, he filled positions on both sides of midfield and as a right winger.

His adaptability was further tested by Ghana coach Otto Addo, who deployed the former Chelsea defender as a right winger in the 2026 World Cup qualifying games against Mali and the Central African Republic. Ghana secured wins in both games, reviving their hopes of qualifying for the tournament, and Lamptey expressed his satisfaction in contributing to the team’s success.

“For me, I’m a player that has always played in different positions, right from the youth level up to the first team,” Lamptey told 3Sports.

“I’ve played on the left, on the right, in the middle. Wherever I’m put to help the team, I focus on the job ahead and what the manager asks of me. I aim to bring out my best to ensure the team gets the results. So, whatever position I’m played in, I’m more than happy to do the job for the team.”

Lamptey elaborated on the tactical demands of playing in various positions. “From a tactical point of view, different coaches ask for different things. Playing at fullback, whether right back or wingback, requires both defending and attacking. You need to have the stamina to go up and down, contribute to the final third, and be solid defensively. I enjoy that challenge because I like to go forward but also do my defending. I look forward to the tasks ahead.”

Lamptey’s positive attitude and willingness to adapt have made him an invaluable asset for both Brighton and Ghana.
