Jimmy Kimmel’s big controversial comeback to ABC explained

Jimmy Kimmel makes controversial comeback to ABC after suspension

Jimmy Kimmel returned to ABC this week after a suspension that turned into one of the biggest late night controversies in years.

The star’s show Jimmy Kimmel Live! was pulled when his controversial remarks on Charlie Kirk’s death upset affiliates, and ABC announced the programme would be “pre-empted indefinitely.”

The decision set off a storm, as more than 400 public figures signed a statement calling it a “dark moment for freedom of speech,” while celebrities like Howard Stern and thousands of fans backed Kimmel.

Reports later revealed that Kimmel’s comeback was not about saving face but about protecting his staff.

According to the Daily Mail, he returned “out of respect” for his crew. One insider explained, “He wanted everyone in his crew not to miss any more work than they already have missed.”

Page Six added that Kimmel even thought of walking away for good but he changed his mind to keep his team employed and stable.

Sources also said the host was preparing to address the suspension on air. He was described as “not going to roll over and just take it” and was ready “to come out swinging.”

However, his current contract ends in 2026, though insiders suggested he may only stay if ABC offers a major deal.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was back on ABC, but not everywhere, as some affiliates, including Sinclair Broadcast Group, still replaced it with local news.

Moreover, Jimmy’s return now raises the question of whether the controversy will help his ratings or deepen the divide.
