Paul Anka Says He Raised Son Ethan Differently From His Daughters

Legendary singer and songwriter Paul Anka has spoken about the special bond he shares with his 20-year-old son Ethan and how raising him differed from raising his daughters. The Canadian entertainer, whose career has spanned more than six decades, discussed fatherhood ahead of the release of his new album Inspirations of Life and Love.

Anka described Ethan as his “buddy” and said they enjoy spending time together. He told People magazine that spending quality time with Ethan has helped him stay young at heart and that he cherished the chance to invest more in his son’s life than he could with his daughters. He noted that with his daughters he was often on the road and busy with touring, so he could not always give them as much focused parenting time.

The singer said that he and Ethan do many activities together, and that he enjoys hosting poker nights with his son and his friends. Anka explained that these moments allow him to stay connected and open to new perspectives, and that he loves learning from Ethan and his generation.

Anka also stressed that while he offers guidance to his son, he does so without overly controlling or hovering. He said he believes in giving Ethan the freedom to figure things out and to trust his own judgment.

At 84 years old, Anka said he does not let his age define him. He believes staying active and engaged with life and family is a key reason he feels healthy and energetic. He said that remaining busy and involved helps keep him young in spirit.

It is worth noting that Anka gained full custody of Ethan in 2017 after a legal battle with his son’s mother, former wife Anna Aberg.
