Selena Gomez Speaks Candidly About Being Misdiagnosed Before Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis

Singer and actress Selena Gomez has revealed that she was initially misdiagnosed while struggling with her mental health before doctors eventually determined she was living with bipolar disorder. The star shared the experience during a recent conversation on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast hosted by her husband, music producer Benny Blanco.

During the discussion, Gomez explained that her journey toward understanding her mental health was long and complicated. She said she felt that something was wrong but did not receive the correct diagnosis at first, which made the situation even more confusing and difficult to manage.

The singer eventually learned that she had bipolar disorder, a mental health condition that affects mood and can involve periods of emotional highs and lows. Gomez first publicly disclosed her bipolar diagnosis in 2020 after years of therapy and treatment.

Gomez revealed that before receiving the correct diagnosis, she went through several forms of treatment and spent time in multiple rehabilitation programs while trying to understand what was happening to her. She noted that navigating the healthcare system while dealing with mental health symptoms can be extremely challenging, especially when the diagnosis is unclear.

The pop star also spoke about the importance of support from loved ones while managing mental health conditions. According to her, Blanco has played a significant role in helping her recognize and cope with difficult moments, including episodes of mania that she sometimes does not fully recognize at the time.

Over the years, Gomez has become a strong advocate for mental health awareness. She frequently encourages people to seek help and not feel ashamed about discussing their mental health struggles.

By sharing her story publicly, the singer hopes to reduce stigma around mental illness and remind others that finding the correct diagnosis can take time but is an important step toward healing and stability.
