Stephen King Reveals the One Storyline He Finds Too Scary to Revisit

Legendary horror writer Stephen King has admitted there is one part of his own work he refuses to return to because it is simply too frightening even for him. In a past Reddit Ask Me Anything session, the 78‑year‑old author answered a fan question about whether he would ever write a sequel to his horror classic It and was blunt in his response.

King explained that revisiting the world of It — and especially the demonic clown Pennywise — is something he cannot bring himself to do. “I don’t think I could bear to deal with Pennywise again,” King said, calling the idea “too scary, even for me.”

First published in 1986, It tells the story of seven children who face an ancient evil that feeds on fear, often appearing as Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The novel became one of King’s most iconic and influential works, spawning a 1990 TV miniseries, blockbuster films in 2017 and 2019, and the HBO prequel series IT: Welcome to Derry. Despite ongoing interest in the It universe and exploration of Pennywise’s origins in adaptations, King has stayed firm that he has no personal plans to continue the story himself.

His statement highlights how even the creator of some of the most terrifying tales in modern fiction recognizes there are some horrors he would rather leave alone
