Her chart-topping debut is being reissued for its belated 35th anniversary

Tracy Chapman is marking the 35th anniversary of her iconic debut album with a special vinyl reissue, while also addressing the significance of her music in today’s political landscape.

Reflecting on her timeless track, “Talkin’ Bout A Revolution,” Chapman shared, “I wrote that song when I was just 16, believing, like many teenagers do, that I could envision a world transformed by our collective will. I really thought that as awareness grew, positive change would follow—where people wouldn’t have to march for their civil rights.” She continued, “It’s gratifying as a songwriter to see that something I created over three decades ago still resonates today. However, from a human rights standpoint, it’s disheartening. Many songs from the record, like ‘Fast Car,’ are filled with hope. I still have faith that we can achieve a better future.”

Last year, Chapman made a notable return when she surprised audiences at the 66th Grammy Awards, performing a duet of “Fast Car” with Luke Combs. This performance was particularly special as it marked 35 years since her first Grammy appearance, coinciding with Combs’ successful cover of the song, which reached the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and peaked at No. 2 on the Hot 100.

The vinyl reissue of Tracy Chapman will be available on Friday, April 4, featuring four editions: the classic black vinyl and three vibrant color variations inspired by the album’s original cover. The album itself made waves by topping the Billboard 200 chart in August 1988.
