Wunmi Mosaku Says Bafta Controversy Overshadowed Her Major Award Win

British-Nigerian actress Wunmi Mosaku has spoken out about the controversy that overshadowed her Best Supporting Actress win at the Bafta Film Awards, revealing that the moment made it difficult to fully celebrate her achievement.

Mosaku, who stars in the film Sinners, explained that the situation unfolded during the awards ceremony when a racial slur was broadcast during the live show. The incident occurred while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award on stage.

According to the actress, the moment cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful milestone in her career. She said the controversy made the experience emotionally challenging, even though the award itself was a significant recognition of her work.

Mosaku criticised the decision to allow the offensive remark to be aired, questioning why it was not removed despite the broadcast being delayed. She noted that organisers had earlier described the ceremony as a family-friendly programme and said she believed the comment should have been censored before it reached viewers.

The actress said the situation was difficult for everyone involved and emphasised that those affected deserved more sensitivity in how the incident was handled. She added that the controversy overshadowed what had otherwise been an important professional achievement.

Despite the difficult moment, Mosaku said she found comfort and support from her fellow cast members. She recalled embracing them backstage shortly after leaving the stage, explaining that the group stood together during the tense aftermath of the incident.

The actress later attended the NAACP Image Awards in California alongside her Sinners co-stars, describing the experience as a “healing” moment that helped restore some of the joy connected to her recent success.

Mosaku also reflected on her personal life, sharing that she is currently preparing for motherhood and learning to manage her ADHD diagnosis. She explained that these developments have influenced how she balances work and personal priorities.

Although the Bafta win remains a proud moment in her career, Mosaku admitted that the controversy surrounding the broadcast made it difficult to celebrate the achievement without mixed emotions.
